In this mudra, the thumb rests at the base of the middle finger, and the middle finger is softly pressed on the thumb just below the knuckle. The three consecutive fingers are relatedly extended to the air.

The Sanskrit words shunya, which means “emptiness,” “openness,” or “spaciousness,” and mudra, which means “gesture,” or “seal,” are combined to form the name of this mudra. Shunya is another word for heaven or the sky. Thus, this mudra can be interpreted as “heaven mudra.”

Steps of Shunya Mudra

  1. Take a comfortable seat in a meditating asana like the lotus posture, the thunderbolt pose, or the shukhasana (easy pose).
  2. Maintain a straight back and look forward to bringing your head into alignment with your spine.
  3. To develop internal awareness, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. With your palms facing up, place your hands on your knees or mid-thigh.
  4. Touch the base of the thumb with the folded middle fingers of both hands.
  5. Use the thumb to gently press the middle finger’s second phalanx, which is the middle bone of the finger.
  6. Keep the remaining fingers relaxed and stretched.
  7. Hold this mudra for ten to fifteen minutes.
  8. When you’re finished, separate your fingers and put them on your thighs or knees.
  9. Spend a few minutes in silence to enjoy the benefits of the meditation.

Benefits of Shunya Mudra

  • This Mudra balances the space element, which aids in curing any ear-related issues brought on by noise pollution and loud music.
  • This Mudra directly stimulates the nerves surrounding the ear, which helps to lessen motion sickness and vertigo.
  • By lowering the space element within your body, the Shunya Mudra is also useful for minimizing the tingling or numbness in any portion of your body.
  • By reducing the space element and preserving the body’s hormonal equilibrium, the Shunya Mudra also aids in treating the hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland behaves abnormally.
  • The heart receives blood through an acupressure point located close to the base of the thumb. By improving the Atrium’s functionality using Shunya Mudra, you can get relief from a number of cardiovascular complications.

Precautions to be taken Shunya Mudra

  • It is advised to employ the mudra only if you are experiencing certain medical ailments that this mudra can treat. Once you get the desired result, you should stop using this mudra because it is only meant to be used temporarily.
  • For example, once your tinnitus or other acute condition has resolved and you have stopped experiencing ringing, stop using the mudra. Avoid pressing the thumb firmly over the middle finger when performing the shunya mudra since doing so will make it difficult to focus on the mudra. This mudra shouldn’t be practiced if you feel extremely sick.
