Prithvi Mudra is referred to as the gesture of the earth which is said to represent the earth elements. This Mudra is mainly used to increase the earth element in an individual as a healing remedy. However, since the ring finger symbolizes earth and the thumb fire, this gesture can also be used to create balance between these two elements. It is considered a powerful mudra that can heal many ailments such as chronic fatigue, osteoporosis, weight loss, convalescence or paralysis, burning sensations throughout the body, ulcers and nail, hair or skin problems.
It is associated with the hair along with bones, nails, cartilage and other internal organs. Any imbalance in the earth element is bound to show up as a problem, especially with our hair. It is carried out to balance this component and enhance the condition of our hair.
Steps of Prithvi Mudra
- Sit cross-legged; preferably Padmasana or Sukhasana. You can also sit in a chair or stand up (back straight) if you have joint pain while sitting cross-legged.
- Place your hands on each kneecap and take 4 deep breaths.
- deepen your inhalation and exhalation.
- Focus on breathing.
- Open your two hands face up and rest on each kneecap. Now bend the ring finger of your hand to the thumb. Your thumb should be in contact with the tip of your ring finger.
- Keep the other three fingers slightly straight.
- Hold this hand motion for 15 minutes in one sitting. Then pause and hold it again.
